CARACAS — Venezuela celebrated Thursday the 225th anniversary of the birth of Simon Bolivar with a floral offering in the National Palace to the remains of the "Liberator," as he is called.
"Bolivar's birthday is always an occasion for celebration, and it is also for a reflection of his revolutionary ideology. This is a thought which transcends the time and it is still valid in Latin America," Venezuelan Vice President Ramon Carrizales said.
The event, taking place in central Caracas, was attended by high-level Venezuelan military and government officials as well as representatives from Colombia, Peru and Bolivia.
Simon Bolivar, born in Caracas in 1783 to a wealthy family, was one of the most important leading figures of a revolt against Spanish colonial rule in Latin America.
His legacy contributed decisively to the independence of present-day Colombia, Venezuela, Panama, Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru.
